Nestled in the foothills of Mount Baw Baw, about a two hour drive away from central Melbourne; lies the historic gold rush town of Walhalla.
The town itself is quaint and has a very European feel; similar to as if time itself had stopped a century ago. Walhalla is surrounded by large hills and provides a feeling of isolation (and tradition) to any visitors coming from the city. The architecture of the town has been well maintained from the gold rush era, with the only signs of modern civilization being that of sealed roads and modern cars driven by visitors and some of the locals. Mine entrances located in the side of the mountains hint as to the gold rush nature of the town in the past.
Below lies a photo gallery of some of the sights located around this traditional town. Unfortunately the mines were closed on Christmas Day so it was not possible to go down into the mines. Nonetheless the town itself, although very small, had plenty beautiful vistas.
